Yesterday marked the 23rd annual World AIDS Day–the first-ever global health day when it was started in 1988. Yesterday also marked the second annual TED convening around women and girls, with major events in Los Angeles and New York, along with 100 other TEDx events across the globe. An extraordinary woman, Piya Sorcar, Founder & CEO of TeachAIDS, was among the closing speakers of TEDxWomen–and showed how her organization is employing design to increase AIDS awareness and knowledge as well as improve the lives of women and men the world over. Described as “animated software,” TeachAIDS’s videos show the power of communication design, and provide huge insights for cross-cultural work of any kind.

Founded [in 2005] at Stanford University, TeachAIDS uses a research-based design process to develop medically-accurate, pedagogically-grounded, and culturally-tailored animated software to optimize learning and retention. Used in more than 30 countries, in partnership with national and international organizations, and incorporating the voices of cultural icons, TeachAIDS provides the most effective HIV and AIDS prevention software to educators, governments, and NGOs around the world–for free.
